243 heads
just to start a topic here...

been seeing some stock 243 heads for sale lately for decent prices. how much of a gain could u get just from having them?

the setup im trying to get is just cam, heads, and intake for now.... i "may" get a bigger cam sometime. just not sure the 226/228 is what is to my likings.

That is a great cam.... Especially with stock unported 243's, or even ported 243's. Change the heads before you change the cam.

You could pick up a set of 243's, then remove the casting boss on the intake, then massage the bowls, and make a nice improvement.
Little cost involvement, and a nice increase.
What plans on the intake?

j-cash- 01-28-2009

never heard of a casting boss on the intake or massage the bowls before... how much work does that involve and cost?

the intake.. not quite sure yet, was debating on the fast or the one pete is looking at. so thats still not for sure yet.

Proxses- 01-28-2009

The casting boss is something that is always removed during porting.
This work can be done in a matter of hours.
As for the intake, the Street Warrior (the one Pete wants) is a great intake.
If you didn't want to invest as much money, I was going to recommend that you have the factory ported by LS2Protworks.

i can get the ls1 intake ported by ls2portworks? ls2 intake wont work with a set of 241 heads will they, gotta do 243 heads and ls2 intake. do u need to do anything with the injectors?

5.7 litre- 02-04-2009

John remember we have the LS6 intake manifold on our cars. there is a Big difference between the LS1 and LS6 manifold. A ported LS6 Should Flow very nice. Cory from LS2portworks gave me a price quote, i'll have to try to look for it in my emails.

Answered in the order they were asked....

Yes you can. LS2portworks is just the name of the company.... But the factory intake on 04 GTO's is a LS6, and it can be ported there also.

ls2 intake wont work with a set of 241 heads will they, gotta do 243 heads and ls2 intake.

No, you would not have to change to 243's just to run a LS2 intake. You can use any cathedral port intake on any cathedral port head.... But I would stick with the factory LS6 intake over the LS2. The LS6 flows better.

do u need to do anything with the injectors?

I am not sure if you are going to use a LS2 intake. I am not sure how the injectors fit.... I think you would have to change your fuel rail....

But if you are asking just because the intake is ported, then no.... You will be just fine.

BUCKNERBUCK2- 02-05-2009

I would stick with the LS6. It flows the same as the FAST up until 4k RPM's on a 346 c.i. block. They are a superior intake compared to the LS2. LS2 is one of the worst intakes flow wise GM has made for the Gen engines.
I remember reading formato stating that LS6 gains are minimal with porting. He is pretty respected in the porting business, so I would look into that further before putting money in a port job IMO.

i see. ill have to give them a call about porting the intake then and see what they say. i could just get a set of ported 243's on there for now.

just for shits.. how big of a cam could i go and still be streetable? would 230/232 .6xx/.6xx 112lsa be ok?

Mine is a 232/234 .595/.598 on a 112lsa and I very streetable.... You remember driving it around at the Trails... The clutch is a bitch but the cam is very streetable! Your power range will be higher up in your RPM range. But I think 230/232 would be fine. I would stay under .600 lift though....

Before you go changing your cam. What are your goals for the car?....

What kind of a car are you looking for? A street car?.... A street and strip car?..... How much street versus strip? 60/40?.... 70/30?....

j-cash- 02-06-2009

i figured the more lift u have the better it will be in the higher rpm range.

Well the plans for the car is too keep it streetable and take it to the strip as well... so id say 70% street and 30% strip. but firstly i need to replace the clutch with a southbend stage 2, and go from there.

Yep replace the clutch and get a shifter it makes a big difference! I would suggest waiting like me for the street warrior to see how it performs for far less money than the fast. You got a good cam Id suggest getting some 243's along with clutch and shifter and going from there. Your car is very capable of mid/high 12's on your 241's. Also the street warrior is basically designed for people who want more mid range power and slightly more top till about 6-6,500 who shift around 6,500 (ME) Perfect for a cam my size and yours. More seat time will lower your pb 1/4 faster than throwing more power

Why do i need to get a new shifter when i already have the gmm race? i think you need a new shifter ;) but ya i need the seat time and we all know this. my clutch has been slipping alot this past summer im just surprised its not smoked yet, im sure its almost there. ill find out in a few weeks when i pull it apart. :)

PEETYZ- 02-16-2009
